FEGLI Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Benefits
You or your beneficiaries can claim FEGLI accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) benefits when you, as the insured, suffer from loss of life, limb or eyesight.
Accidental death benefit claims go to your FEGLI beneficiary or beneficiaries, while dismemberment benefits are awarded directly to the insured, which is you.
The death benefit to beneficiaries under Basic coverage is equal to your BIA, without factoring in the age-multiplication.
The dismemberment benefits you will be eligible for under Basic coverage for the loss of one hand, a foot, or vision in one eye is equal to one-half of your BIA. This increases to your full BIA for the loss of two or more of these in the same accident.
Under Option A, accidental death benefits are equal to the amount of Option A coverage, while the dismemberment benefits for the loss of one hand, a foot or vision in one eye are equal to half of the Option A coverage. For the loss of two or more of these in the same accident, the benefits are comparable to the Option A coverage.
Note that AD&D benefits, if payable, will be paid in addition to the regular FEGLI Basic and Option A benefits.
FEGLI Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Eligibility
For the record, AD&D coverage is an automatic part of both Basic and Option A insurance for federal employees and is included in the coverage at no extra cost. There is no AD&D coverage for Options B & C, or for annuitants and compensations eligible to continue life insurance coverage following their separation from federal employment.
You only get AD&D benefits when the cause is violent, external, and accidental, and independent of other reasons. You can claim it only if you lose your life, limb(s) or eyesight within a year after the incident.
